What happens to the information you type — and why it matters in financial services
The fastest way to understand artificial intelligence is to begin with what it is not. AI is not a brain. It is not conscious. It does not understand markets, suitability, or fiduciary duty. It does not know whether its output is accurate.
Modern AI is a pattern-recognition and pattern-generation system. It was trained on enormous amounts of text and learned statistical patterns. When prompted, it generates a response that is statistically plausible — which is not the same as correct, current, or compliant.
Key Mental Model:
AI is a pattern-matching system, not a thinking one. Confidence in AI output is not evidence of accuracy. A confident, well-formatted answer about a security, a tax treatment, or a client's portfolio can be completely wrong.
An AI can produce a polished paragraph recommending an allocation, citing a tax rule, or summarizing a regulation — and be wrong on every point. Polish is not accuracy. In financial services, acting on confidently wrong AI output can harm clients and create regulatory exposure.
